Spanish-Moroccan cooperation leads to arrest of terrorist network spreading extremist content
Spain's Civil Guard has apprehended seven suspects in a coordinated anti-terrorism operation supported by Morocco's General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST). The operation, which began in late 2023, resulted in arrests across Toledo, Madrid, and Pontevedra provinces.
Three suspects were initially detained in Toledo, including an influential figure who disseminated jihadist ideology and a minor. The group utilized multiple social media profiles to spread extremist content.
In separate operations, authorities arrested four additional "terrorism influencers" who had amassed tens of thousands of followers. These suspects allegedly concealed terrorist propaganda and Islamic chants within their online content, with some utilizing official ISIS media platforms for distribution.
Currently, two suspects remain in pre-trial custody as investigators continue to gather evidence and pursue additional leads. The successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-border security collaboration between Spain and Morocco in countering terrorist threats and organized crime.
The joint operation particularly highlights Morocco's ongoing dedication to international counterterrorism efforts and cross-border security partnerships. This cooperation between Spanish and Moroccan security forces exemplifies their shared commitment to addressing common security challenges in the region.
