Spain’s Volotea drops Iran-related fuel surcharge as regulators tighten scrutiny

Spanish low-cost airline Volotea has decided to remove its fuel surcharge policy for new bookings starting June 10, following regulatory scrutiny over its pricing practices.

The airline had introduced the temporary surcharge in March after rising fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including the Iran conflict, pushed up operating expenses across the aviation sector.

Under the previous policy, passengers could be charged an additional €6 to €14 per flight, depending on oil price fluctuations before departure. The measure was presented as a response to volatile energy markets, but it quickly drew attention from consumer protection authorities.

Regulators in Italy and Spain have launched investigations into whether such surcharges comply with EU consumer protection and transparency rules. The European Commission has also clarified that airlines must not apply retroactive fees or hidden charges not clearly disclosed at the time of booking.

Consumer organizations argued that the practice lacked transparency, while Volotea said most affected passengers accepted the additional cost during its implementation period.

The airline has now confirmed it will absorb fuel price increases moving forward and maintain flexible ticket conditions at no extra cost. It also stated that no disruptions or cancellations are expected during the summer travel season.

The decision reflects growing pressure on European airlines to balance rising operational costs with strict regulatory requirements on pricing transparency.
