Spain Records Lowest Unemployment since 2008
Spain has shown a notable improvement in its labor market indicators. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, unemployment has fallen to its lowest level since 2008. In April, the number of job seekers dropped by 2.6% compared to March, totaling 2,512,718 people. This positive shift is largely driven by strong performance in the services sector, particularly tourism.
Year-over-year, social security registrations rose by 487,134 individuals, marking a 2.31% increase. Simultaneously, the number of unemployed people declined by 153,782, reflecting a 5.77% drop.
Both genders benefited from the decrease: female unemployment fell by 2.5% (38,291 fewer women), and male unemployment dropped by 2.8% (29,129 fewer men). Additionally, women's employment reached an all-time high, with 10,238,541 women registered in the workforce.
Elma Saiz, Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, emphasized that employment is not only growing but also improving in quality, crediting labor reforms for these significant results.
