Spain launches “pilgrim menu” initiative with discounted restaurant offers during papal visit
As Spain prepares for the official visit of Pope Leo XIV to Madrid, the country’s restaurant sector has introduced a large-scale initiative aimed at welcoming the expected influx of visitors, pilgrims, and volunteers.
More than 1,200 restaurants across major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands are participating in a coordinated program offering discounted meal options. The initiative, known as the “pilgrim menu,” was launched by a major restaurant industry group representing dozens of brands and companies across the country.
The program has been designed to respond to the anticipated arrival of large numbers of people during the papal visit, which is expected to attract over a million participants across various events, religious gatherings, and public celebrations.
Participating establishments include a wide range of international and national food chains, as well as local restaurants. The offers are intended not only for pilgrims, but also for volunteers, event staff, journalists, and tourists attending the large-scale religious and cultural events in the Spanish capital.
The discounted menus vary depending on the restaurant but generally include complete meal deals at reduced prices compared to standard menus. Fast-food chains and casual dining brands have introduced special combinations aimed at affordability and accessibility for large crowds.
Industry representatives say the initiative is designed to ensure smooth service during peak demand while also supporting hospitality businesses by increasing customer flow during one of the most significant public events of the year in Spain.
The papal visit is expected to generate significant economic activity in the hospitality and tourism sectors, with restaurants, hotels, and transport services all preparing for increased demand throughout the week.
Analysts note that large international events often have a strong impact on local economies, particularly in the food and service industries, where temporary promotions and special offers are commonly introduced to manage demand and enhance visitor experience.
