Spain launches study for Morocco–Spain tunnel with vodafone and experts

The Spanish government has awarded Vodafone UK the communications services contract for the team studying a proposed tunnel connecting Spain and Morocco under the Strait of Gibraltar. According to Spanish media, the contract, signed in mid-August, includes voice and data services for around 15 experts working to revive an initiative that has been under study for over forty years.

Official sources indicate the contract is valued at approximately €24,000 per year (over €29,000 including taxes) for a two-year term. It covers a 1-gigabit network, 24/7 monitoring, as well as fixed and mobile lines, smart devices, and advanced technical services to ensure uninterrupted work.

Simultaneously, the Spanish Ministry of Transport assigned the public company EniCo to conduct a financial feasibility study of the project, with a budget of around €350,000 funded by the European “Next Generation” fund. The study will examine passenger and freight flows, potential station locations in Algeciras or Tarifa, and the possibility of private sector involvement similar to the Channel Tunnel.

On the technical side, a German tunneling company has been commissioned to study geological challenges at the “Amp de Camarinal,” one of the most complex points of the project. These studies aim to provide a comprehensive overview by next summer, although estimates suggest the tunnel’s actual construction may not occur before 2040.

This ambitious project, spanning roughly 40 kilometers—28 km underwater at depths up to 300 meters—aims to become a strategic corridor for transport, trade, and energy, even though no agreement to start construction has yet been reached.
