Spain issues red alert in southeast over 150 km h winds

Spain’s state meteorological agency has placed the entire province of Castellón under a red alert, the highest risk level, as forecasters warn of exceptionally strong winds set to hit the southeastern region on Saturday.

The national weather service AEMET said gusts could reach 130 km h along the coast and 140 km h inland, with peak gusts exceeding 150 km h in the most exposed areas. Authorities described the measure as exceptional, reflecting the severity of the expected conditions.

An orange alert has also been issued for coastal areas due to heavy swells, with waves forecast between two and three meters. The combination of violent winds and rough seas is expected to heighten risks along the shoreline.

Several municipalities, including Castellón de la Plana and Almassora, have suspended all outdoor activities in anticipation of the storm. Local authorities ordered the closure of parks and public gardens and banned the installation of temporary structures and the lighting of campfires across the province.

Emergency services urged residents to secure their homes, particularly terraces and balconies, to prevent debris from being blown away. Officials advised limiting travel to essential journeys and avoiding wooded areas, construction sites and billboards that could collapse under strong gusts.

Access to breakwaters and cliff areas along the coast has been formally prohibited. Emergency responders warned that the force of the waves could sweep away objects and pose a serious danger to anyone approaching the shoreline.
