Spain housing protests tense as far-right activists confront Madrid encampment
Tensions escalated in central Madrid on Saturday night when dozens of far-right activists gathered near Puerta del Sol, where housing-rights campaigners have maintained a protest encampment for about a week.
Some members of the far-right groups were seen making Nazi salutes as they gathered in the area. Several attempted to approach the encampment, prompting a significant police deployment to prevent the two groups from coming into direct contact. Spanish media footage showed officers pursuing activists who tried to move toward the camp.
The confrontation came after a day of large demonstrations across Spain, where protesters demanded stronger action to address rising housing costs and growing difficulties for tenants. Reuters reported that around 70,000 people took part in the Madrid demonstration according to government figures, while organizers gave a substantially higher estimate. Protests were also held in dozens of other Spanish cities.
Housing crisis fuels nationwide mobilization
The Puerta del Sol camp has become one of the most visible symbols of the current housing protest movement. Hundreds of people have occupied the central Madrid square with tents and makeshift facilities, demanding measures to improve access to affordable housing and strengthen protections for renters.
The encampment emerged amid mounting public anger over housing costs and a high-profile eviction involving an 87-year-old woman, which helped intensify demonstrations across the country.
The movement gained further momentum after Spain's Parliament rejected two emergency housing decrees put forward by the government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The measures included provisions intended to protect vulnerable tenants, regulate certain forms of rental housing and address speculation in the property market.
Police intervene as tensions rise
Authorities faced the task of keeping opposing groups apart as the evening confrontation developed in the capital. Reuters reported that three far-right activists were arrested during the incidents, while police used force to prevent attempts to disrupt the housing demonstration.
The clashes added a new dimension to a dispute that had largely focused on housing affordability, rental prices and government policy. The presence of far-right activists near the protest camp heightened tensions in a politically charged atmosphere following the parliamentary defeat of the government's housing proposals.
For the demonstrators remaining at Puerta del Sol, the parliamentary setback has not ended the campaign. Housing-rights groups have indicated that further mobilization remains possible, including calls for broader action if authorities fail to respond to their demands.
Madrid becomes focal point of housing debate
The events in Madrid underline how Spain's housing crisis has moved beyond a dispute over individual rents and property policy to become a major source of social and political mobilization.
With demonstrations spreading across the country and the government facing pressure after its housing measures were rejected, Puerta del Sol has become a highly visible meeting point for a movement demanding changes to the way housing is regulated and accessed.
Saturday night's confrontation also demonstrated the wider tensions surrounding the protests, as competing political groups sought to make their presence felt in one of Madrid's most prominent public spaces.
