Spain and Morocco strengthen security cooperation ahead of 2030 World Cup
In a significant move to bolster security cooperation, Spain and Morocco are enhancing their collaborative efforts as the two nations prepare to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal. This initiative underscores their commitment to addressing regional and global security challenges.
Today, Abdellatif Hammouchi, the Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), welcomed a high-level delegation from Spain in Rabat. The delegation included Major General Luis Peláez Piñeiro, the Head of Intelligence for the Spanish Civil Guard. This meeting marked Piñeiro's first international trip since his recent appointment, highlighting Morocco's pivotal role in Spain's security strategy.
The discussions between Hammouchi and Piñeiro were centered on strategic cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism and the fight against transnational organized crime. According to a statement from DGSN-DGST, Piñeiro's choice of Morocco as his inaugural destination reflects the robust strategic partnership between the two countries.
Both officials emphasized the need to develop bilateral cooperation mechanisms to enhance their partnership in addressing security threats. They celebrated their collaborative achievements in dismantling and neutralizing security risks, particularly in light of the upcoming World Cup, for which ensuring public safety has become paramount.
In their discourse, the importance of migration management was also a focal point. The two nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to mitigating common threats, particularly concerning irregular migration. This collaboration is crucial as both countries navigate the complexities of security in an increasingly interconnected world.
Spain and Morocco have a history of strong bilateral ties, particularly in counterterrorism efforts. Their collaboration has resulted in the successful dismantling of several terror cells and the apprehension of individuals linked to ISIS. Recent reports have highlighted Morocco’s intelligence capabilities, which have been instrumental in aiding Spain to capture suspects associated with terrorist organizations.
Moreover, Spain continues to support Morocco's territorial integrity, viewing the Autonomy Plan as a credible solution to the Sahara dispute. This alliance further solidifies their joint efforts in security matters, ensuring a unified front against common challenges.
As the 2030 World Cup approaches, the commitment to a safe and secure environment remains at the forefront of Spain and Morocco's agenda, reflecting their dedication to fostering stability and cooperation in the region.
