Spain and Morocco strengthen economic ties ahead of 2030 World Cup
Spain's Secretary of State for Trade, Amparo López Senovilla, has concluded a successful two-day official visit to Morocco, focused on enhancing commercial cooperation between the two nations in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
During her visits to Casablanca and Rabat, López Senovilla engaged in intensive bilateral meetings with Moroccan authorities and private sector representatives, exploring strategic collaboration opportunities. The mission particularly emphasized potential partnerships related to the 2030 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.
The mega-sporting event is expected to drive substantial investments in infrastructure, digitalization, technology, and tourism sectors where Spanish companies have established international expertise. "We are confident that our companies' expertise and capabilities will contribute to the success of these projects and further strengthen the partnership between Spain and Morocco," López Senovilla stated during an economic meeting in Rabat.
The Secretary of State reaffirmed Spain's support for Morocco's strategic initiatives, highlighting Spanish companies' contributions to major infrastructure projects. She referenced the Spanish Council of Ministers' recent approval of over 750 million euros for railway rolling stock supply, which aligns with World Cup 2030 preparations and will contribute to modernizing Morocco's rail network. She also emphasized the role of the Business Internationalization Fund (FIEM), which is currently processing a loan for the railway sector.
Spain maintains its position as Morocco's primary trading partner, with bilateral exchanges exceeding 22.5 billion euros annually. Spanish exports to Morocco grew by nearly 6% in 2024, making the kingdom one of Spain's most dynamic export destinations. Spain currently maintains a trade surplus of over 3 billion euros with Morocco.
More than 350 Spanish companies operate in Morocco, contributing to key sectors including energy, infrastructure, automotive, finance, and technology. Their involvement in flagship projects has created employment opportunities and stimulated local economic growth.
The visit has successfully strengthened economic ties between the two nations and opened new avenues for cooperation in preparation for the 2030 World Cup. Spanish companies' active participation in Morocco's structural projects is expected to both reinforce bilateral relations and generate mutual economic benefits.
