Spain allocates 113,000 euros to provide halal food for Moroccan naval trainees
The Spanish government is set to spend approximately 113,000 euros to supply special halal meal plans for Moroccan soldiers undergoing intensive training at the state-owned shipbuilding company Navantia.
This initiative is part of a cooperation agreement between Spain and Morocco to train members of the Royal Moroccan Navy in operating the "Avante 1800" patrol vessel, currently being developed by Navantia for Morocco.
According to a Spanish newspaper, the meals will strictly follow Islamic dietary laws, requiring certified halal meat and complete exclusion of pork and alcohol. Navantia is hosting 86 Moroccan military personnel from February this year through June 2026.
Navantia began constructing the "Avante 1800" warship in 2023, designed specifically for maritime surveillance and border control missions. Named "San Fernando," this vessel is Navantia’s 565th ship, measuring 87 meters in length and 13 meters in width, with a crew capacity of 60.
The shipbuilding project has generated over one million work hours and created around 1,100 direct and indirect jobs at the shipyard and related industries over three years.
The "San Fernando" patrol ship boasts advanced military equipment, including innovative sensors and radars, electronic countermeasures, a 76mm gun, missile launch systems, and the ability to deploy helicopters. It also features surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile launch platforms and a point-defense missile system (PDMS).
The Spain-Morocco contract includes comprehensive technical and logistical support, such as spare parts, tools, technical documentation, and specialized training for Moroccan Navy personnel in Spain to ensure proficient operation of this sophisticated vessel.
This agreement reflects Morocco’s recent efforts to modernize its land, air, and naval military arsenal and diversify its security and defense partnerships with countries such as the United States, Israel, and China, aiming to strengthen its defense capabilities.
