South Korea confirms eighth African swine fever case in 2026
South Korean authorities have confirmed a new outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), marking the eighth reported case in the country since the start of 2026. The latest infection was identified at a pig farm in Pocheon, a city located north of Seoul, prompting immediate containment measures.
Officials stated that the affected animals will be culled to prevent further transmission of the virus. Despite the recurrence of cases, the government has ruled out imposing a nationwide shutdown of pig farms, opting instead for targeted controls and monitoring in affected areas.
ASF outbreaks were first reported earlier this year in eastern and central regions of the country, with several cases detected in Gyeonggi Province. Veterinary authorities continue to strengthen surveillance and biosecurity protocols, particularly in regions close to previous infections.
African swine fever does not pose a threat to human health, but it is highly contagious among pigs and wild boar, often resulting in severe economic losses for the livestock sector. South Korea has been working to contain the disease through rapid response measures and cooperation with farmers.
