Sound Energy advances Morocco’s energy independence with Tendrara gas milestone
British energy company Sound Energy PLC has announced a major milestone in Morocco’s Oriental region as the Tendrara gas project begins initial commissioning. The first gas has entered the gas gathering system at the TE-5 Horst production concession, preparing for long-term production into the micro-LNG plant.
The company, which holds a 20% stake in the Tendrara concession, confirmed the final installation of the gas gathering system on November 28. The concession is operated by Mana Energy Ltd, which owns a 55% stake. Sound Energy’s statement highlighted the successful flow of gas from the TE-6 production well, marking the start of the commissioning phase.
The micro-LNG plant, designed and managed by Italfluid Geoenergy, will deliver liquefied natural gas to Afriquia Gaz, Morocco’s energy distributor, under a 10-year gas sales agreement. The deal ensures the purchase of 100 million cubic meters annually, with pricing indexed to European and US benchmarks.
Sound Energy CEO Majid Shafiq described the milestone as pivotal, bringing gas to Moroccan industrial consumers and signaling the company's entry into an "exciting period." He expressed optimism about the full commissioning of the micro-LNG facility and the delivery of sales gas in the coming months.
Morocco’s Ministry of Energy has been actively launching international tenders to develop its liquefied natural gas infrastructure, aiming to strengthen energy sovereignty and diversify suppliers. Sound Energy has also reaffirmed its confidence in Morocco’s gas potential, estimating undiscovered reserves in the eastern region could exceed 20 trillion cubic feet.
The project underscores Morocco’s commitment to enhancing its energy independence while drawing on international expertise and partnerships.
