Somalia reaffirms support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara
Somalia has reiterated its full support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, praising the recent adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which recognizes the Moroccan autonomy plan as a credible basis for resolving the regional dispute.
The reaffirmation came during a bilateral meeting held Friday in Rabat between Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita. According to a joint statement released after the talks, the Somali minister restated Mogadishu’s long-standing position in favor of Morocco’s unity and the stability of the region.
Abdi Ali expressed his “great satisfaction” with the approval of Resolution 2797, noting that the text strengthens international support for a peaceful and lasting settlement. He highlighted Morocco’s “serious and realistic” efforts to bring an end to what he described as an artificial dispute, while also commending the work of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara.
For his part, Bourita thanked Somalia for its consistent backing and for its affirmative vote during the Security Council session on October 31, 2025. He also reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to respecting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring the deepening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
