Slovakia faces backlash over €53 million renovation of controversial defense ministry tower

A newly renovated high-rise building intended to become the headquarters of Slovakia’s Ministry of Defence has sparked a heated public debate over government spending, with critics questioning the cost of transforming the country’s most recognizable former military tower.

The 27-story structure, located in Bratislava, is widely known by its nickname “Kukurica”, meaning “Corn” in Slovak, because of its distinctive shape resembling a corn cob. Originally built during the communist era as military accommodation, the tower has undergone a major refurbishment aimed at converting it into a modern government facility.

The renovation, estimated at €53 million, has triggered criticism from opposition figures and members of the public who argue that the project represents excessive spending at a time when public resources are under pressure.

Defense Minister Robert Kalinak, a close ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, presented the renovated building to the public last week, praising its updated facilities and new role as the ministry’s future base. However, the reaction from critics was far less positive.

Social media users compared the project to an expensive luxury development, with some describing it as an unnecessary “skyscraper worthy of Dubai.” Opposition lawmaker Gabor Grendel from the Slovensko party mocked the renovation by calling it the “most expensive corn in the world.”

Beyond the debate over aesthetics, concerns have also emerged about whether public funds were used appropriately during the refurbishment process. Critics have called for greater transparency regarding the contracts, costs and decision-making behind the project.

Supporters of the renovation argue that modernizing government infrastructure is necessary and that upgrading an existing building can be more efficient than constructing an entirely new headquarters. They also point to the strategic importance of having a dedicated and updated facility for the country’s defense administration.

The controversy surrounding the Kukurica tower reflects a broader political discussion in Slovakia over state spending priorities, government transparency and the management of major public projects.

As the building prepares to become the official home of the Ministry of Defence, the debate over its cost and symbolism is likely to continue, placing the tower at the center of a wider conversation about public investment in the country.
