Sixty-Seven journalists killed worldwide in one year, nearly half in Gaza, says RSF

A total of 67 journalists were killed worldwide between December 2024 and December 2025, nearly half of them in the Gaza Strip, according to the annual report published Tuesday by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The organization says the death toll has risen again due to the actions of armed forces and criminal groups, warning that reporters are not victims of accidents but of deliberate violence.

RSF also reports 503 journalists currently detained across 47 countries, with the highest numbers in China, Russia, and Myanmar. In addition, 135 journalists remain missing and 20 are held hostage, mainly in Syria and Yemen.

After one of the lowest global death tolls recorded in 2023, conflicts — particularly the war in Gaza — have sharply increased the danger for media workers. RSF notes that the Israeli army is responsible for at least 29 media workers killed in Gaza over the past twelve months while they were doing their jobs, making it “the most dangerous actor for journalists today.”

The organization denounces what it calls targeted attacks, rejecting claims that reporters were killed by stray fire. RSF warns that attempts to discredit journalists are increasingly being used to justify violence against them.

Beyond the Middle East, RSF highlights a surge in killings in Mexico, where nine journalists covering local news, corruption, or organized crime were murdered. Ukraine and Sudan also remain among the deadliest countries for the press.
