Sixth victim found after pedestrian bridge collapse on Santander beach
Rescue teams have recovered the body of a sixth victim following the collapse of a wooden pedestrian bridge on a beach in Santander, northern Spain, authorities reported on Thursday. The total death toll from the tragedy now stands at six, with one survivor.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when a group of seven young people were walking on the wooden bridge connecting two small cliffs. The structure gave way suddenly, causing multiple casualties. The mayor of Santander, Gema Igual, confirmed the details shortly after the accident.
Local authorities highlighted that winter storms in Spain frequently damage coastal infrastructures, a problem that has intensified this year due to consecutive severe weather events. Officials continue to investigate the collapse and assess the safety of other similar coastal structures.
