Six Southern French departments face ‘Very High’ wildfire risk as heatwave intensifies
Six departments in southern France have been placed under a "very high" wildfire danger alert for Wednesday as scorching temperatures, severe drought and strengthening winds combine to create critical fire conditions, according to Météo-France.
The highest alert level applies to the departments of Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, Gard, Bouches-du-Rhône and Vaucluse.
Strong winds increase fire danger
Météo-France said the escalation to the red warning level is primarily driven by a significant increase in the mistral and tramontane winds, which are expected to produce gusts of 70 to 80 km/h.
The strong winds are forecast to extend as far west as the Var department and are expected to persist through Thursday before gradually easing later in the week.
Authorities warn that these conditions could allow any fire to spread rapidly, making suppression efforts more difficult.
Additional regions remain on high alert
Three other departments—Var, Ardèche and Drôme—have been classified under a high wildfire risk (orange alert).
The warnings reflect a combination of prolonged hot weather and exceptionally dry vegetation across much of southern France.
Persistent drought fuels concerns
According to Météo-France, soil moisture levels have continued to deteriorate after more than two months of significantly below-average rainfall.
The agency said the prolonged lack of precipitation has established a persistent drought across the country, with conditions worsening daily.
Recent weeks of intense heat and very dry weather have accelerated the drying of vegetation, creating an environment highly susceptible to wildfire ignition and rapid fire spread.
Conditions comparable to historic drought episodes
Météo-France noted that current soil dryness is comparable to some of the most severe drought episodes recorded since national monitoring began in 1959.
The combination of extreme heat, powerful regional winds and critically dry landscapes has prompted authorities to urge heightened vigilance as France continues to experience one of its most intense early summer heatwaves in recent years.
