Six South African cities rank among world’s top 20 for crime – Numbeo 2026
Six cities in South Africa have been listed among the 20 most crime-affected cities worldwide in Numbeo’s Crime Index 2026, according to local media reports published on Saturday.
The ranking, compiled by Numbeo — a well-known participatory online database — places Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital of KwaZulu-Natal, at the top of the global list. The city recorded a crime score of 82.8 and a low safety score of 12.2, reflecting high levels of crime ranging from theft to homicide.
Pretoria, the country’s administrative capital, follows closely in second place with a crime score of 81.8 and a safety score of 18.2. Johannesburg ranks fifth (80.8 crime / 19.2 safety), while Durban comes sixth (80.4 / 19.6).
The coastal city of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) is ranked eighth with a crime score of 78.6, and Cape Townappears in 16th position with a score of 73.7.
The Numbeo index evaluates 400 cities worldwide, based on user perceptions of crime and safety. Each city is assigned a rank, a crime score, and a safety score.
According to Numbeo, the indicators include perceived crime levels, feelings of safety during the day and at night, concerns over specific crimes such as assault, robbery, car theft, and harassment, as well as the severity of property crimes and violent offenses.
At the national level, South Africa ranks fifth globally in the 2026 Crime Index with a score of 74.55, behind Papua New Guinea, Venezuela, Haiti, and Afghanistan.
