As the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its decisive stages, with the semi-finals determining the finalists, several of the tournament's biggest stars have already seen their hopes of lifting football's most prestigious trophy come to an end.

While the competition has produced memorable performances and surprising results, a number of established football powers were eliminated earlier than expected, leaving some of the world's most recognizable players without the chance to compete for the title.

Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush also left the tournament with mixed emotions. Egypt reached the Round of 16 for the first time in its World Cup history, marking a significant milestone for the national team before suffering elimination against Argentina in a closely contested match.

Although these players did not achieve their ultimate objective, many delivered strong individual performances and remained among the standout names of the tournament. Their campaigns highlighted both the competitiveness and unpredictability of the FIFA World Cup, where even football's biggest stars can see their ambitions ended by a single knockout defeat.
