Silverfish infestations: what they are, their risks, and how to prevent them

Silverfish, named for their silvery scales and fish-like movements, are small insects measuring 10 to 15 millimeters in length. Recognizable by their elongated, flattened bodies, fine antennae, and three long tail-like appendages, these creatures are nocturnal and often found in damp, dark areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or around windows—especially in older homes or spaces with high humidity. Originally tropical insects, silverfish have adapted to temperate climates, thriving in indoor environments with elevated moisture levels.

Although unsettling in appearance, silverfish pose no direct risk to human health. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, nor do they trigger allergic reactions like dust mites. However, their presence often indicates excessive indoor humidity, a condition that can contribute to mold growth and other health hazards. Feeding on cellulose, silverfish consume paper, fabrics, wood, and starchy foods like flour and cereal, potentially damaging books, textiles, food packaging, and wooden furnishings.

Preventing silverfish infestations requires reducing indoor humidity to below 50 percent. This can be achieved through dehumidifiers, proper ventilation, and timely repair of leaks. Regular cleaning to eliminate dust and debris, sealing cracks where silverfish might hide, and storing food in airtight containers are also effective. Natural repellents like cedar shavings, cinnamon, citrus peels, or essential oils can deter minor infestations, while severe cases may require professional pest control services. Experts can apply targeted treatments and recommend long-term solutions to protect homes from future infestations.

While silverfish are relatively harmless, their presence underscores the importance of maintaining a clean, well-ventilated home environment to prevent potential damage and create a more comfortable living space.
