Sharp decline in underage marriages reported in Morocco

Morocco has recorded a significant reduction in underage marriages over the past seven years, according to new data presented by Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi. Speaking before the House of Representatives, the minister revealed that the number of cases dropped from 26,298 in 2017 to 8,955 in 2024, marking one of the steepest declines in recent years.

Ouahbi explained that the number of requests for underage marriage authorizations has fallen by nearly 20,000, a trend he attributes to growing public awareness and a clearer understanding of the dangers associated with early marriage. The minister highlighted that, in 2020, rural areas registered 11,830 requests, compared to 4,527 in urban zones, reflecting a noticeable gap between regions.

The downward trajectory continued into 2023, recording 9,021 requests, of which only 2,880 came from cities. While the numbers remain concerning, authorities view the decline as a positive sign of shifting cultural attitudes.

Ouahbi stressed that underage marriage remains fundamentally tied to cultural norms and social perceptions. He called for stronger efforts to promote gender equality and empower young girls, insisting that broader educational and economic opportunities are essential to ending the practice.
