In a recent interview with BBC News, global pop star Shakira Mebarak opened up about her personal experience as an immigrant in the United States and the fear that now accompanies it. The Colombian-born singer recalled moving to Miami at the age of 19, a time when she felt welcomed and embraced. However, she now describes a growing sense of unease, largely influenced by immigration policies under former President Donald Trump.

“Like many other Colombians, I came to the US searching for a better future,” Shakira shared. When asked what it's like to be an immigrant today, she responded, “It means living in constant fear, and it’s painful to witness.”

Now 48, the artist used the interview to call on the public to stand firm in the face of adversity and advocate for humane treatment of all individuals, regardless of shifting immigration policies. “More than ever, we must stay united,” she said. “And we must make our voices heard  policies may change, but human dignity must remain.”

Shakira is currently on a sold-out tour titled Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women No Longer Cry), across North and South America. One of the emotional highlights of the show is her performance of Acróstico, a touching ballad dedicated to her two sons, Milan (12) and Sasha (10). During the performance, video screens show the boys joining her in song, a moment Shakira says melts her heart every time.

“They are everything to me  my strength and my purpose,” she said. “Sharing the stage with them every night is incredibly meaningful.”

As for her European fans, Shakira hinted with a smile to “stay tuned” for upcoming announcements.
