Scotland yard investigates potential HIV victims linked to convicted predator
Scotland Yard is urging anyone who may have had contact with Jonathan Carl between 2019 and 2023 to come forward after the man was convicted of rape and reckless transmission of HIV. In August, the 42-year-old former hairdresser was sentenced to 17 years in prison by London’s Snaresbrook Crown Court.
Carl reportedly targeted men through dating apps such as Grindr and Scruff, coercing some into sexual activity while knowing he was HIV-positive and deliberately avoiding medication. Investigators discovered numerous explicit messages on his phone, indicating a wide range of potential victims.
So far, 82 individuals, many considered vulnerable, have been interviewed, and some have tested positive for HIV. Detective Chief Lewis Basford emphasized that knowingly transmitting a sexually transmitted infection is illegal.
Detective Sara Bishop, sharing details in a video on X, stated that Scotland Yard’s investigation has revealed the scale of Carl’s offenses and ensured his prosecution. Authorities estimate that up to 318 men could have been exposed and are encouraging them to seek testing and support.
