Russian strikes on Kyiv leave three dead before ceasefire talks in Saudi Arabia

At least three people, including a five-year-old child, lost their lives after Russia launched a series of drone attacks on Kyiv overnight Sunday, according to Ukrainian officials and emergency responders.

The assault on Ukraine’s capital occurred just before ceasefire negotiations in Saudi Arabia, where Ukraine and Russia are set to engage in indirect talks mediated by the United States. The discussions, scheduled for Monday, aim to establish a temporary halt in long-range strikes targeting energy infrastructure and civilian areas.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Ukrainian delegation would first meet with U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia on Sunday. Technical teams are also being sent to discuss the specifics of the proposed partial ceasefire.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia deployed 147 drones across the country. Ukrainian defenses intercepted 97 of them, while 25 failed to reach their targets due to countermeasures. The strikes also impacted regions including Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Odesa, and Donetsk.

Explosions echoed for hours as air raid sirens blared across Kyiv. Many of the Russian drones were flying at lower altitudes to bypass air defense systems, leading to widespread debris falling on residential areas. The Kyiv City Military Administration reported three deaths and 10 injuries.

In the Dnipro district, two residential buildings caught fire after being hit by drone debris, according to local officials. The State Emergency Service confirmed that a blaze on the top floors of a nine-story building resulted in the death of a woman. In the Podil district, a fire erupted on the 20th floor of a 25-story building, while in Holosiivskyi, fires broke out in a warehouse and an office building, claiming another life.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported downing 59 Ukrainian drones overnight. This included 29 over the Rostov region and 20 in southwestern Astrakhan. In Rostov, one person was killed, and a vehicle was set ablaze following a Ukrainian drone attack, according to the region’s temporary governor, Yuri Slyusar.
