Russian missile attacks hit Kyiv as European allies reinforce support for Ukraine

Russia launched another wave of missile attacks on Kyiv overnight, triggering explosions across the Ukrainian capital as air defence systems were activated to intercept incoming ballistic missiles.

The renewed assault came only hours after European leaders gathered in Paris alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reaffirm long-term military support for Ukraine and strengthen cooperation on air defence.

Air raid alerts followed by explosions

Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv shortly after midnight as Ukraine's Air Force warned that multiple missiles were approaching the capital.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defence units were engaged in intercepting ballistic missiles targeting the city.

Several explosions were reported across the capital, while fires broke out in the Holosiivskyi district in southern Kyiv. Emergency services were deployed to assess damage and respond to the incidents.

Officials had not immediately released information regarding casualties or the full extent of the destruction.

Russian attacks continue despite international diplomacy

The latest bombardment underscores the continued intensity of Russia's long-range missile campaign against Ukraine, particularly since the beginning of the summer, when Kyiv began facing increasingly frequent attacks involving ballistic missiles that are more difficult to intercept.

The strikes came shortly after a summit of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris, where leaders pledged to strengthen Ukraine's air defence capabilities and maintain military assistance.

The Kremlin has criticized the initiative, while European governments insist continued support remains essential for Ukraine's security.

Ukrainian government enters transition

Separately, Ukraine is preparing for a change in government after Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko submitted her resignation to parliament.

Parliamentary Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk confirmed that lawmakers are expected to consider the resignation under constitutional procedures, with the process of forming a new government potentially beginning in the coming days.

The political transition comes as Ukraine continues managing wartime governance while confronting sustained military pressure.

European cooperation expands

During the Paris summit, participating countries announced additional initiatives aimed at strengthening Ukraine's long-term defence capabilities.

Among the measures discussed were expanded cooperation on air and missile defence, financial assistance and the creation of a multinational coalition focused on developing advanced anti-ballistic defence capabilities in Europe.

Leaders also confirmed plans for future military exercises in neighbouring countries to improve operational readiness and coordination among allied forces.

As Russian missile attacks continue and diplomatic efforts intensify, Ukraine remains at the centre of Europe's evolving security strategy, with military support and air defence expected to remain key priorities in the months ahead.
