Russia rejects Tuareg rebels’ call for withdrawal of troops from Mali
Moscow has firmly rejected calls from Tuareg rebel groups for the withdrawal of Russian forces from Mali, reaffirming its commitment to continue military cooperation with the country’s authorities.
The Kremlin stated that Russian forces will remain deployed in Mali as part of ongoing efforts to support the government in combating extremist groups and armed insurgencies. The statement comes at a time when the Malian authorities are facing increasing pressure from both separatist rebels and jihadist groups operating in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Dmitry Peskov confirmed Russia’s continued engagement in security operations. He stated that Moscow would persist in supporting efforts to fight terrorism, extremism, and other threats to stability, while assisting the current authorities in maintaining control.
Russia’s position effectively dismisses the demand made by Tuareg rebel factions, who have called for foreign military withdrawal from northern Mali. The rebels argue that external military involvement has complicated the internal conflict, which has persisted for over a decade.
The Malian government, which has strengthened its ties with Russia in recent years, continues to rely on foreign security assistance amid ongoing instability in parts of the country. Russian support has been presented by Moscow as part of broader efforts to combat terrorism across the Sahel region.
The situation reflects the wider geopolitical competition in West Africa, where several international actors are involved in security and military cooperation agreements with local governments facing insurgent threats.
