Russia escalates attacks as international calls for sanctions intensify

Ukraine has raised the death toll from Russia’s largest aerial strike on its territory to 13, with at least 60 others injured. The casualties include three children ages eight, 12, and 17 in the Zhytomyr region.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 298 drones and 69 missiles during the overnight assault. Ukrainian defense systems successfully intercepted 266 drones and 45 missiles.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed its forces captured the village of Romanivka in the eastern Donetsk region. Moscow also stated that its air defenses shot down 110 Ukrainian drones overnight, including several near Moscow and Tver.

In a significant development, both sides completed a large-scale prisoner exchange, releasing 1,000 detainees each the largest swap since the conflict began three years ago.

Political and Diplomatic Reactions

Former US President Donald Trump condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him “crazy” and warning that a full invasion of Ukraine could “lead to Russia’s downfall.” Trump also hinted at strengthening sanctions against Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on global leaders to intensify pressure on Moscow, stating that continued silence from major powers, particularly the US, emboldens Putin. Zelenskyy stressed that new sanctions could make a difference.

Trump, however, criticized Zelenskyy’s tone, claiming that his public comments were unhelpful and problematic.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul advocated for additional Western sanctions, saying they might force Putin into negotiations. EU’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, echoed this sentiment, urging the global community to apply maximum pressure. She expressed sorrow over the loss of innocent lives, especially children.

US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg denounced the latest Russian attacks as violations of the 1977 Geneva Peace Protocols and urged an immediate ceasefire.

Military Support

The Netherlands confirmed it will deliver the final F-16 fighter jet completing its pledge of 24 aircraft to Ukraine on Monday.
