Russia cancels annual naval parade due to security concerns

The Russian government has announced the cancellation of its traditional naval parade, originally scheduled for Sunday as part of Fleet Day celebrations. The decision was made "for security reasons," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as quoted by Russian news agencies.

The event, typically held with much fanfare in Saint Petersburg and other naval bases, commemorates the strength and history of the Russian Navy. It was expected to feature more than 150 military vessels and involve over 15,000 personnel across the Baltic, Caspian, Arctic, and Pacific seas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was scheduled to attend the parade in Saint Petersburg, emphasized the central role of the Navy in protecting national interests. “Our primary objective is to ensure Russia’s security and firmly safeguard the sovereignty and national interests of the Motherland,” he stated, according to the Kremlin’s press office.

This year’s cancellation comes amid escalating drone attacks from Ukraine, which has intensified its counteroffensive against Russian targets following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In recent months, Russia itself has faced nearly daily drone strikes targeting military and logistical infrastructure, prompting growing concerns over public and strategic event safety.

The Fleet Day parade has historically served not only as a show of strength but also as a patriotic demonstration of Russia's naval heritage. Its absence this year highlights the increasingly precarious security situation facing the Kremlin, even far from the frontlines.
