Russia and Ukraine edging toward peace talks amid continued fighting

On day 1,181 of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the war continues as both sides engage in battle while also preparing for potential peace negotiations. Russia maintains control over roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory. During upcoming peace discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin is anticipated to demand that Ukrainian forces withdraw from four key regions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, firmly rejected any troop withdrawal from areas still under Kyiv’s authority, particularly in the eastern and southern parts of the country, as stated in an interview with The Kyiv Independent.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced via Telegram that it has taken control of two villages—Marine in the northern Sumy region and Novoolenivka in eastern Donetsk. Ukrainian officials have not yet verified these claims.

Former US President Donald Trump said that both Moscow and Kyiv have agreed to begin immediate negotiations to achieve a ceasefire. Trump made this statement following a call with Putin that lasted over two and a half hours.

After the call, Putin said Russia is willing to draft a memorandum outlining the framework for a potential peace agreement, including key principles and timelines. He emphasized that a ceasefire would need to tackle deeper issues, such as Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.

President Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness for peace talks but insisted that Russia must prove it is serious about a genuine dialogue. He also stressed the importance of US involvement in the process, noting that only Putin would benefit if Washington distanced itself from the negotiations.

Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding a large-scale prisoner exchange between the two countries.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that the European Union stands ready to increase sanctions against Moscow, stating that this was agreed upon after Trump's discussion with Putin. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius expressed skepticism, suggesting that Putin is merely stalling and has no real intention of compromising—only aiming for a ceasefire under his terms.

Germany and Denmark have urged China to use its influence to push Russia toward peace. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China supports all peace efforts and encourages continued dialogue.

According to Trump, Pope Leo XIV has expressed interest in mediating peace talks between Russia and Ukraine—a proposal welcomed by US and European leaders. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed Italy’s readiness to assist in peace efforts. However, the Vatican has not yet commented on this potential involvement.

In economic developments, Finland’s Ministry of Defence plans to allocate around €90 million from seized Russian assets to purchase ammunition for Ukraine. Since the invasion began in 2022, the EU has frozen approximately $300 billion in Russian assets.

The European Union is also reportedly preparing to reduce the current oil price cap on Russian crude from $60 to $50 per barrel as part of a new sanctions package. Meanwhile, Poland intercepted 5 million metric tonnes of Boeing aircraft tyres intended for Russia, citing violations of international sanctions.
