Russia advances toward Kostiantynivka in critical battle for Eastern Ukraine

Russian forces are intensifying their offensive against Kostiantynivka, one of Ukraine’s most strategically important defensive positions in the eastern Donetsk region, as Moscow seeks to gain momentum in a campaign that has otherwise produced only gradual territorial advances.

According to Ukrainian military officials, Russian troops have begun infiltrating the outskirts of Kostiantynivka, raising the prospect of urban combat after months of heavy fighting in surrounding areas. Small assault groups are reportedly probing the city's defences while attempting to establish positions on its perimeter.

Kostiantynivka forms part of Ukraine’s so-called "fortress belt", a network of heavily fortified cities that has played a central role in slowing Russian advances across eastern Ukraine. Together with neighbouring defensive positions, the city serves as a critical logistics hub supporting Ukrainian operations in the Donetsk region.

Military analysts consider control of Kostiantynivka strategically significant because it would improve Russia’s ability to threaten other Ukrainian-held urban centres and disrupt supply routes supporting frontline units.

The latest offensive comes despite signs that Russian advances along much of the approximately 1,200-kilometre frontline have slowed in recent months. While Moscow continues to launch sustained attacks across several sectors, progress has generally been incremental and accompanied by heavy losses in personnel and equipment.

Nearby Druzhkivka has also become increasingly exposed to Russian drone strikes and artillery attacks. Ukrainian forces have expanded protective measures along key transport routes, including the installation of anti-drone barriers designed to shield military logistics from the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems.

For Ukraine, maintaining control of Kostiantynivka remains essential to preserving its defensive network in the east. A successful Russian breakthrough could place additional pressure on neighbouring cities and complicate Ukrainian efforts to sustain defensive operations throughout the Donetsk region.

The battle also highlights the evolving nature of the conflict, with both sides increasingly relying on drones, precision strikes, and small-unit infantry tactics alongside conventional artillery and armoured operations.

As fighting intensifies around the city, military observers expect Kostiantynivka to remain one of the most closely watched sectors of the war, reflecting its strategic importance in the broader contest for control of eastern Ukraine.
