RSF drone attack targets military airbase near Port Sudan
Sudan’s army reported that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a drone attack on a military airbase and other nearby facilities close to Port Sudan airport. This marks the RSF's first strike in the eastern city.
The attack, carried out using drones, targeted an airbase, a cargo warehouse, and some civilian structures. The army confirmed some damage, particularly to an ammunition depot. The civilian and military sections of the airport are located together, leading to uncertainty about whether the drones aimed at military or civilian facilities, or both. According to sources, five drones were launched by the RSF at the airbase.
There have been no reports of civilian casualties, and it is unclear if the RSF intended to hit a fighter jet that had been part of an air force display the previous day. A Sudanese passenger plane, unable to land at Port Sudan, was diverted to Jeddah Airport, following navigation data from Flight Radar. The plane, which had taken off from Dubai International Airport, made an emergency landing at King Abdulaziz International Airport after a circular maneuver over the Red Sea.
The ongoing conflict between Sudan's army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, continues to cause widespread destruction and displacement.
