Ronaldo praises Morocco's "Wonderful Football" ahead of 2026 World Cup
Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário praised Morocco for playing "wonderful football" in recent years, calling the team a formidable opponent for Brazil in the 2026 World Cup. Speaking at the World Cup group stage draw ceremony in Washington on Saturday, Ronaldo highlighted Morocco’s remarkable performance at the previous World Cup in Qatar, where the team reached the semi-finals.
The 2026 draw placed Brazil in Group C alongside Morocco, Scotland, and Haiti. Ronaldo described the Moroccan squad, known as the Lions of the Atlas, as Brazil’s toughest challenge during the group stage. He also described Scotland as a "tough" opponent but noted that match timings would be favorable for Brazil, avoiding extreme heat.
Morocco’s first match against Brazil is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 18:00 local time in New York (23:00 GMT+1). The draw ceremony was attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, representing the co-host nations.
This edition of the World Cup will be historic: it is the first to be co-hosted by three countries and the first to feature 48 teams, who will compete in a total of 104 matches—78 in the United States, 13 in Canada, and 13 in Mexico. Six additional teams will qualify through playoffs in March to complete the 48-team lineup.
