Robert Francis Prevost becomes pope Leo XIV: A new chapter for the Catholic Church
On May 8, 2025, the Vatican announced the election of Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church. The 69-year-old American succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. Adopting the papal name Leo XIV, Prevost now steps into one of the most scrutinized and revered roles in the world.
Known for his humility and missionary zeal, Leo XIV’s journey to the papacy has been anything but conventional. Ordained in 1982, he began his priesthood in Peru, dedicating decades to pastoral service in remote and impoverished areas of South America. His ministry was marked by a hands-on commitment to uplifting marginalized communities, a legacy that profoundly shaped his spiritual leadership.
Born in Chicago in 1955, Leo XIV comes from a multicultural background with French, Italian, and Spanish roots. Early in life, he joined the Order of Saint Augustine, a decision that set the foundation for his future. Armed with degrees in mathematics, philosophy, and a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Church. His leadership extended from serving as Prior General of his order to becoming the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru.
In 2023, Pope Francis brought Prevost to Rome, appointing him prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a critical role overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide. Under his stewardship, the Vatican began implementing reforms aimed at modernizing governance and enhancing lay involvement in Church decision-making processes.
Leo XIV’s election comes at a pivotal time for the Church, which faces mounting challenges. From the ongoing Synod on Synodality to addressing the role of women, tackling sexual abuse scandals, and navigating governance reforms, the new pontiff inherits a complex and demanding agenda.
Like his predecessor, Leo XIV envisions a more inclusive Church but remains firmly rooted in its doctrinal principles. He has expressed a desire to broaden the role of laypeople while safeguarding the unique responsibilities of ordained clergy.
His experience as a mediator during political crises in Peru and his decades of missionary work suggest a papacy devoted to reconciliation, dialogue, and a renewed focus on the Church’s peripheries. However, his tenure begins under the shadow of scrutiny. Questions surrounding his leadership of the Augustinian province in the United States have resurfaced, placing transparency and accountability at the forefront of his early challenges.
Despite these hurdles, the new pope’s calm demeanor, spiritual depth, and commitment to dialogue offer hope for a papacy that balances continuity with progress. His ability to listen, adapt, and navigate the complexities of the modern world will shape the legacy of his time as the leader of over 1.3 billion Catholics.
The world now waits for Leo XIV’s first official message, which will set the tone for what many hope will be a transformative era for the Church.
