Rio de Jeneiro: Over 40 bodies found after city’s deadliest police raid
In the aftermath of Rio de Janeiro’s deadliest police raid, residents of a northern favela aligned more than 40 bodies on a public square early Wednesday, according to AFP reporters on the scene.
The grim discovery followed a massive security operation on Tuesday, which mobilized over 2,500 police officersagainst the Comando Vermelho, one of Rio’s most powerful criminal organizations controlling drug trafficking in several favelas.
Authorities previously announced that 60 suspected gang members and four police officers were killed during the raid, which took place in the Complexo da Penha and Complexo do Alemão, two densely populated areas near the city’s international airport.
The United Nations Human Rights Office expressed its horror at the events and called for prompt and transparent investigations into the circumstances of the operation, whose human toll has sparked outrage across Brazil.
