Reviving History: Moroccan Landmark Reconstructed in Blocky Pixels
In a creative fusion of the past and the future, researchers from Leiden University in the Netherlands collaborated with local Moroccan students to digitally reconstruct a historically rich landmark using the blocky, pixelated world of Minecraft. Their objective was to cultivate connections across borders, disciplines, and generations by reimagining Bab el-Mrissa, a 700-year-old fortified city gate, within the unexpected virtual landscape.
"It's about sparking curiosity and posing 'what if' questions about the past," expressed Sybille Lammes, a Leiden professor leading the project. "We encouraged the students to think outside the box, envisioning what this historical site might have looked like in its prime."
The pixelated virtual recreation, though rudimentary in its blockiness, ignited the imaginations of the 20 participating teens. Subsequently, the students developed a newfound appreciation for Salé's history, engaging in discussions about maritime trade routes from the past and making commitments to preserve the physical site and its surroundings.
While Bab el-Mrissa continues to stand tall as a stone-and-mortar landmark, its newly rendered digital counterpart is inspiring young citizens to connect more deeply with their cultural heritage through the unexpected medium of a video game. Beyond a mere virtual field trip, the Minecraft recreation has sparked genuine connections across age groups, opening up dialogues about "what could have been" in the past.
