Renault CEO urges EU to push Chinese carmakers to source more parts in Europe
The Chief Executive Officer of Renault has called on the European Union to encourage Chinese automakers operating in Europe to increase their sourcing of automotive components from within the region.
Speaking at an industry event in Brussels, Renault CEO François Provost argued that Europe should negotiate a framework with China that goes beyond vehicle assembly and includes greater integration of local supply chains.
His remarks come as several European carmakers have entered partnerships with Chinese manufacturers to produce vehicles in European plants that currently suffer from excess capacity. However, Provost stressed that most of the value in the automotive industry—around 95%—is generated by parts suppliers rather than final assembly.
He suggested that increasing local sourcing of components would strengthen Europe’s industrial base and help balance the benefits of foreign investment in the region’s car manufacturing sector.
The proposal reflects broader concerns in Europe over competitiveness, industrial policy, and the growing presence of Chinese automotive companies in the European market.
