Release of Crans-Montana bar owner sparks anger among victims’ families

The decision by Swiss authorities to release the owner of a bar devastated by a deadly fire in Crans-Montana has reignited outrage among the families of victims, nearly a month after the tragedy that claimed 40 lives during New Year celebrations.

A court in the Swiss canton of Valais ordered the provisional release of Jacques Moretti, the French co-owner of the establishment, after a bail of 200,000 Swiss francs was paid by a close associate. The ruling was met with strong criticism from lawyers representing bereaved families, who described the move as deeply shocking and disrespectful to the victims.

Although released, Moretti remains under strict judicial supervision. The court imposed several preventive measures, including a ban on leaving Switzerland and a daily obligation to report to police authorities, citing concerns over potential flight risk.

The case has drawn international attention, particularly in Italy, where many of the victims originated. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani publicly expressed his indignation, calling the decision an affront to grieving families.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances of the fire, which reportedly began when decorative candles ignited flammable ceiling materials in the crowded bar. Authorities are also reviewing compliance with safety regulations, as local officials have acknowledged lapses in inspections over recent years.

Jacques Moretti and his wife, co-owner of the bar, are under criminal investigation for negligent homicide, bodily harm by negligence, and negligent arson. Prosecutors have indicated that the inquiry could be expanded to include additional individuals if further responsibilities are identified.
