Regragui on Hakimi’s injury: 'He’ll come back stronger than ever'

Morocco’s national team coach, Walid Regragui, has shared his thoughts on Achraf Hakimi’s recent injury, which occurred during Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich. Speaking on the French program Canal Football Club, the coach reflected on the moment and expressed confidence in Hakimi’s resilience.

Regragui recounted the incident, saying, “When I saw his ankle, I asked Rachid Benmahmoud what he thought. But when I saw Hakimi crying out of anger, I realized the situation was serious.” According to the coach, Hakimi’s tears were not from pain but frustration, a testament to his competitive spirit. “I know Hakimi well. When he comes back, he will return like a beast. Sometimes we argue on the pitch because of his passion, but that’s part of who he is,” Regragui added.

The coach also shared a lighthearted moment with Hakimi at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Sale following the CAF Awards ceremony. Recalling their exchange, Regragui joked with Hakimi, who had entered the room on a scooter: “Ballon d’Or! You look taller today.” Hakimi replied humorously: “Maybe because of the scooter.” The coach quipped back: “Or maybe because you won the Ballon d’Or.” The playful interaction highlighted the mutual respect and camaraderie between the two.

Hakimi’s injury came just days after being crowned African Player of the Year 2025 in Rabat. The award recognized his stellar performances for both PSG and the Moroccan national team, solidifying his position as one of Africa’s brightest stars. His contributions have been vital to Morocco’s continued ascent in global football, following their historic run to the 2022 World Cup semifinals.

Despite the setback, Regragui remains optimistic about Hakimi’s recovery. The coach’s confidence underscores the defender’s determination to return to form and continue his impact for both club and country.
