Rare Brazilian tapir birth marks conservation success at Ain Sebaa Zoo

Casablanca’s Ain Sebaa Zoo has welcomed the birth of a Brazilian tapir, a rare and significant event that highlights the institution’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and endangered species breeding programs.

The newborn tapir was born on May 16 after a gestation period of approximately 13 months. It is the offspring of Trompette, a female tapir originally from France, and Bily, a male from Italy. With this latest addition, the zoo is now home to four Brazilian tapirs.

Native to South America, the Brazilian tapir is considered an important species for biodiversity. Although it remains the largest terrestrial mammal in several South American ecosystems, its population has been declining due to habitat loss, environmental pressures, and human activities. In Morocco, the species can only be found at Ain Sebaa Zoo, making this birth particularly noteworthy.

Zoo officials described the event as an encouraging achievement for conservation efforts. Veterinary specialists are closely monitoring the newborn’s health and development to ensure it grows under optimal conditions.
