Rabat's Tourism Surge: Capital City Reports Over 700,000 Overnight Stays in 2024
Morocco's capital city Rabat has demonstrated remarkable growth in its tourism sector during 2024, recording 713,566 overnight stays in the first ten months of the year. This 4% increase from the previous year's figure of 683,910 stays reflects the city's growing appeal as a tourist destination.
The Tourism Observatory reports that October was particularly successful, with 86,814 overnight stays—a 10% jump from October 2023's 79,153 stays. While the overall occupancy rate in classified tourist accommodation establishments showed a slight decrease to 52% from 53% in 2023, October's occupancy rate improved to 58%, up one percentage point from the previous year.
A significant contributor to this growth has been the Rabat-Sale airport, which experienced a dramatic 42% increase in passenger arrivals. The facility welcomed 514,567 travelers by October's end, compared to 362,518 during the same period in 2023.
This local success story is part of a broader national trend in Morocco's tourism sector. The country's classified tourist accommodation establishments registered over 24.1 million overnight stays in the first ten months of 2024, marking a 10% increase from 2023.
The national tourism landscape has been equally impressive, with Morocco welcoming 15.9 million tourists by November 2024—a 20% increase from 2023, representing an additional 2.6 million visitors. This growth was driven by a 23% rise in international visitors, adding 1.5 million arrivals, alongside a 17% increase in visits from Moroccan Residents Abroad, contributing an additional 1.1 million tourists.
These figures underscore Rabat's emergence as a key player in Morocco's tourism industry and highlight the country's overall success in attracting both international and domestic visitors, despite global tourism challenges.
