Rabat archbishop faces sexual misconduct allegations as Vatican investigation begins
The Archbishop of Rabat, Cristobal Lopez Romero, has stepped back from his duties after several women accused him of sexual misconduct, prompting an investigation by the Vatican, according to testimonies collected by international news sources and people familiar with the case.
At least five women have made allegations against the Spanish-born Catholic leader, whose position as head of the Church in Morocco has placed him at the centre of a widening inquiry. The reports led Church authorities to open an internal investigation and prompted the archbishop to temporarily withdraw while the process continues.
In a statement, Lopez Romero said he had already responded to his ecclesiastical superiors and would continue to cooperate fully with the investigation. He denied the accusations, stating that he had committed no acts of assault, violence or sexual harassment.
The Vatican inquiry will examine the allegations and determine the appropriate next steps according to Church procedures. The case adds to ongoing global scrutiny of how religious institutions respond to accusations of sexual misconduct involving members of the clergy.
The Archdiocese of Rabat has not announced further details regarding the investigation process or any temporary arrangements concerning leadership responsibilities during the inquiry.
Cristobal Lopez Romero, a Spanish member of the Salesian order, has served as Archbishop of Rabat since 2018. The Catholic Church in Morocco represents a small community, primarily composed of foreign residents, migrants and diplomatic personnel, while maintaining a long-standing presence in the country.
The allegations and the opening of a Vatican investigation mark a significant moment for the Catholic community in Morocco, where religious authorities are now facing calls for transparency and accountability as the inquiry progresses.
