Qatar denies allegations of targeting ICC prosecutor’s accuser
Qatar on Friday dismissed what it described as “baseless allegations” regarding a case involving the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), after The Guardian published an article accusing the Gulf state of attempting to discredit a woman who had filed a complaint against him.
The ICC’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, who recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials, is currently on leave pending an investigation into allegations of sexual assault.
According to The Guardian, private intelligence firms allegedly hired by Qatar targeted the complainant in an effort to collect information that could discredit her, including supposed links with Israel.
In a statement released Friday, Qatar’s Government Communications Office rejected what it called “fabricated reports” and “coordinated disinformation efforts” led by “malicious actors” seeking to undermine Doha’s role as a mediator in the Israel–Hamas conflict.
The ICC’s oversight body had announced last year that it ordered an external probe into “alleged misconduct” by the prosecutor, without providing details. Several media outlets have since reported that Khan was accused of inappropriate behavior toward a staff member — accusations he has firmly denied.
