Putin announces successful final test of nuclear-powered cruise missile ahead of deployment

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday the successful completion of the final test of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, a weapon he described as “unique” and capable of reaching targets up to 14,000 kilometers away.

In a video released by the Kremlin, Putin stated that “the decisive tests are now completed” and ordered preparations to begin for the missile’s deployment within the Russian armed forces. “This is a unique creation that no one else in the world possesses,” he said, emphasizing its “unlimited range.”

According to Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, the most recent test, conducted on October 21, saw the Burevestnik remain airborne for approximately 15 hours, covering a distance of around 14,000 kilometers — a range he said “is not the limit.” Gerasimov added that the missile can strike “highly protected targets anywhere in the world with guaranteed precision.”

The Burevestnik program was first unveiled by Putin in 2018 as part of a new generation of strategic weapons designed to bypass almost all existing missile defense systems. The announcement comes amid ongoing Russian military operations in Ukraine and heightened tensions with Western powers over Moscow’s nuclear rhetoric.
