Protest in Tripoli calls for amnesty and rights of Lebanese islamist prisoners
Hundreds of residents gathered on al-Nour Square in Tripoli on February 15 to support Lebanese Islamist prisoners, according to local correspondent Michel Hallak. The sit-in featured portraits of the detainees and calls for their rights to be respected.
Organized by the families of the prisoners, the demonstration demanded a general amnesty, expedited trials, an end to detention without trial, and adherence to human rights in line with national laws. Participants also called for “comprehensive justice that excludes no one” and the release of prisoners from Akkar, Minié, Tripoli, the Bekaa Valley, and the South, denouncing ongoing biases in Lebanon’s justice system and broader social development.
This protest coincides with a recent official agreement between Lebanon and Syria, signed in early February, regarding the transfer of approximately 300 Syrian detainees from Lebanon’s overcrowded prisons. The issue of Islamist prisoners in Lebanon has gained renewed attention following the rise to power of the rebel coalition led by Ahmad el-Chareh in Damascus, which overthrew the Assad regime in December 2024.
