Prosecutors seek 30 years in France stabbing case

Prosecutors in France have requested a 30-year prison sentence for a 32-year-old Moroccan national accused of stabbing his former partner multiple times in a violent attack that nearly cost her life. The trial is taking place before the criminal court of Finistère in western France.

The prosecution described the defendant as a dangerous and controlling partner who showed no genuine remorse or clear explanation for his actions. In addition to the prison term, the public prosecutor called for a permanent ban from French territory and the withdrawal of parental rights concerning the couple’s young son.

The incident occurred on June 18, 2023, at the victim’s home in Brest. According to court proceedings, the accused allegedly forced his way into the residence and attacked his former partner with a knife in front of their three-year-old child. Several of the wounds were described as potentially fatal. The victim survived after receiving rapid assistance from neighbors and undergoing intensive medical treatment, including several weeks in critical condition.

During the hearings, the defendant denied any intent to kill. Prosecutors argued that his statements reflected a lack of accountability and an unwillingness to confront what they described as a pattern of violent and manipulative behavior.

Court records indicate that the victim had filed multiple complaints in the past related to alleged violence, threats, and property damage. Law enforcement had reportedly intervened at the couple’s residence on previous occasions.

The defendant also faces charges of violence and death threats and risks a life sentence under French law. The verdict is expected soon. Defense attorneys have asked the court for leniency, arguing for a sentence that would allow the possibility of rehabilitation.
