PP Accuses Sánchez Government of Boycotting May 2 Celebration in Madrid

The Popular Party (PP) has condemned what it describes as Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's "pathological sectarianism" and accused the central government of attempting to undermine Madrid's May 2 celebrations. Alfonso Serrano, Secretary General of the Madrid branch of the PP, made the remarks during the festivities at Puerta del Sol, which for the first time were held outside the Real Casa de Correos.

Serrano emphasized that the event was organized "by and for the people of Madrid," not to honor any specific group. He praised the regional government for holding the ceremony in the street despite what he called obstruction efforts from the Sánchez administration. According to Serrano, Madrid is currently enjoying "the best moment in its history."

Carlos Díaz-Pache, PP spokesman in the Madrid Assembly, also criticized the central government for eliminating the traditional civic-military component of the event. He claimed the decision reflected the Prime Minister’s intent to distance the Armed Forces, which are highly regarded in Madrid, from its citizens.

Díaz-Pache further highlighted the absence of the Madrid Socialist Party from the institutional ceremony, interpreting it as a result of the regional government’s veto of central officials. He accused the Socialists of isolating themselves behind "Pedro Sánchez's wall" and holding their own separate event elsewhere in the city.

Finally, Díaz-Pache pointed to recent polling data, asserting that it shows the Socialist Party is increasingly disconnected from the people of Madrid, while support for regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso continues to grow. He also criticized Más Madrid, calling the party a “false political project” that has abandoned its feminist and environmental values.
