Power outage in Iberian Peninsula disrupts air travel services
A massive power outage across the Iberian Peninsula has led to significant disruptions in various sectors, including air travel. Royal Air Maroc (RAM) announced on Monday that some of its flights may be affected due to technical issues linked to the blackout.
According to RAM, the disturbances are related to problems with the check-in and boarding pass issuance systems at several airports. As a precaution, the airline advised passengers to frequently check their flight status and ensure their contact information is up to date through the “Manage My Booking” section on the company’s website. RAM emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation to minimize the impact on travelers.
The blackout, which affected both Spain and Portugal, also extended into parts of France, causing a widespread shutdown of essential services such as the internet, public transportation, traffic lights, and even nuclear power stations. Although power has been restored in parts of Spain with support from Morocco and France, many areas remain without electricity.
In Morocco, the National Airports Office (ONDA) reported similar issues at Moroccan airports, where check-in and boarding systems experienced disruptions. ONDA clarified that the issues stemmed from the power outage in the Iberian Peninsula, which disrupted international telecom links, particularly those routed through servers located in Spain.
Efforts are ongoing, with technical teams working alongside international operators to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
