Portugal heads to presidential runoff with socialist favored
Portugal voted on Sunday in a decisive presidential runoff that pits Socialist candidate Antonio Jose Seguro against far-right challenger Andre Ventura, with opinion polls pointing to a clear victory for Seguro.
Voters returned to polling stations after a competitive first round that drew unusually high participation, though turnout in the runoff appeared more subdued. While recent storms disrupted voting in a limited number of municipalities, analysts say voter fatigue and a lack of enthusiasm for the remaining candidates may have played a larger role in lower participation.
Surveys conducted ahead of the vote consistently showed Seguro well above the 50% threshold, benefiting from support that extends beyond the left. Several centrist and conservative figures endorsed him in the runoff, citing concerns over Ventura’s confrontational rhetoric and populist agenda.
Although the Portuguese presidency is largely ceremonial, the head of state holds important constitutional powers, including the ability to dissolve parliament in exceptional circumstances. Ventura has argued for a more assertive presidency, calling for greater political intervention from the role.
Despite expectations of defeat, Ventura’s candidacy highlights the growing influence of the far right in Portugal. His Chega party has rapidly expanded its presence in national politics, reflecting broader trends seen across Europe, even as a significant portion of the electorate remains resistant to his platform.
As ballots are counted, the outcome is expected to reinforce Portugal’s traditional political balance while confirming the far right as a lasting force in the country’s evolving political landscape.
