Pope arrives in Cameroon with peace message for Anglophone regions
Pope Leo XIV is expected to arrive in Cameroon on Wednesday after departing from Algiers, continuing a major apostolic journey across Africa focused on peace and interreligious dialogue. The visit comes at a time when Cameroon faces ongoing tensions in its Anglophone regions, where an armed conflict has persisted for nearly a decade.
Before reaching Yaoundé, the pontiff concluded a symbolic visit to Algeria marked by messages promoting fraternity among religions. In Cameroon, a country where Christians represent a significant part of the population and where the Catholic Church plays an important social role through schools, hospitals, and humanitarian work, the pope is expected to emphasize reconciliation and national unity.
In the capital Yaoundé, Pope Leo XIV will meet President Paul Biya and address state authorities and diplomats. His schedule also includes a visit to a Catholic orphanage and private discussions with local bishops. The visit is seen as both pastoral and diplomatic, reflecting the Church’s influence in social mediation across the country.
One of the most anticipated moments will be a visit to Bamenda, in the northwest region, which has been heavily affected by violence between government forces and separatist groups since 2017. The conflict has caused thousands of deaths and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians. A temporary ceasefire was announced by separatist groups to allow the papal visit to proceed safely.
Church leaders hope the pope’s presence will encourage dialogue and reduce violence. In Douala, where a large public mass is planned, preparations are underway to welcome hundreds of thousands of faithful. The visit highlights both the spiritual and social role of the Catholic Church in addressing Cameroon’s political and humanitarian challenges.
