Poland rejects EU migration pact and aligns with Budapest
Two months after taking office, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has firmly rejected the European Pact on Migration and Asylum, aligning his stance with that of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. In a letter dated October 7 and addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Nawrocki declared that he “will not consent to the implementation of the migration and asylum pact in Poland.”
The letter, made public on October 9 by his chief of staff Paweł Szefernaker via the social platform X, marks a new escalation in tensions between Warsaw and Brussels. Nawrocki criticized the mandatory relocation mechanism for migrants among EU member states, arguing that “Poland must retain full sovereignty over its migration policy.”
This position places Poland squarely alongside Hungary, which has long opposed Brussels’ migration initiatives. Both governments have denounced what they see as European overreach, favoring instead national control of borders and selective humanitarian aid.
